You’ve got 3 seconds to get their attention

Sit next to someone while they scroll. It’s brutal. The thumb barely stops. Most posts don’t really get looked at, they get ruled out, and it happens so fast that afterwards they couldn’t tell you a single thing they skipped.

That’s the room your content walks into. You get about three seconds. The platforms know it too, which is why Meta has counted a three-second view as a view for years.

Here’s what catches a lot of businesses out. The content usually isn’t bad. The message is fine, the offer’s fine, the video’s nicely shot. It just opened with nothing, so nobody hung around long enough to find out.

Which is why the hook isn’t something you bolt on at the end once the edit’s done. It’s the thing you build the whole post around. And it only really has one job, which is to entertain them while you solve their problem.

You can spot bad content a mile off once you’re looking. The logo. The slow pan across the building. The business owner opening with how many years they’ve been in the industry. None of it earns you a second look, and online you’re competing with everything else on that feed.

Then there’s the bit everyone forgets. The hook only buys you the next few seconds. If there’s nothing behind it, you’ve got a great opening line attached to thin air, and the graph falls off a cliff at four seconds instead of one. Whatever the hook opens, the rest has to close. That’s the storyline, and it’s where most content falls over.

There is a formula for attention-grabbing content, and it’s exactly why marketers train in this for years. Without that training you’ll write hundreds of scripts that don’t land, and eventually you start wondering whether anything will ever work. A good marketer already knows the formula. The skill is applying it to your brand and your audience, so your content earns attention from the very first second.

And if you think AI alone is the answer, you’ll be disappointed. AI will hand you fifty hooks in a minute. It hasn’t got a clue which one works for your business. Someone still has to choose the right one, then build the story underneath it. That’s the job of a good marketer.
